What is CUET?

CUET is an abbreviation of Common University Entrance Test. It was launched so that there would be a uniform process of admission to undergraduate courses in India. Previously, the admissions were accepted on the basis of Class 12 board marks, which were not consistent throughout boards and states.

CUET (Common Universities Entrance Test) is a centralised examination that provides students an opportunity to take admission in Central Universities of India and private institutes for multiple programs. This test was launched in 2022 by the National Testing Agency (NTA). So now there is just one test that applicants must take in order to be considered for admission. CUET is standardised and administered by the Ministry of Education (MoE) of the Indian government.

CUET Eligibility Criteria

It is important to note that while CUET allows students to appear for the test, individual universities may have additional course-specific eligibility criteria. To appear in CUET UG 2026, candidates must meet basic eligibility requirements set by NTA:

  • Educational Qualification: Must have passed Class 12 or equivalent examination from a recognized board with at least 45% marks (varies by category and university).

CUET UG Admission Process

CUET scores are used to admit students to more than 240 universities for undergraduate studies. These are central universities, state universities, deemed institutions, government colleges and private universities. After the CUET result is announced, students have to apply individually to all the participating universities. There is no central counselling system, and the admission process includes:

  • Fill out the online application and submit it via the NTA website for CUET.
  • You must upload documents and pay the fee.
  • After you have applied for CUET, you will need to take the CBT exam.
  • Once you have passed your exam, you can access your results and print out your scorecard.
  • You will need to apply separately for counselling through individual universities.
  • The seat allocation process will be based on merit, cut-off scores and availability.

Professional programs may use CUET scores in certain courses based on admission and institute policies. Leading central universities such as Geeta Institute of Law, University of Delhi (DU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and the University of Hyderabad accept CUET scores for a wide range of undergraduate programs.

Among private and state institutions, universities like Amity University (Noida), Galgotias University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), and Lovely Professional University (LPU) also consider CUET for various professional courses.

The information on subject combinations and eligibility should be verified by students who are interested in legal studies before applying. Most universities publish course-wise merit lists depending on CUET scores. The admission is subject to cut-offs and eligibility requirements.

CUET Results, Cut-Off & Counselling Process

After the exam, NTA releases a provisional answer key. Candidates can challenge discrepancies by paying a nominal fee per question. The final CUET UG 2026 result will be declared online. Students can download their scorecard using their application number and password.

Each institute releases its own cut-off marks based on:

  • Number of applicants
  • Exam difficulty level
  • Available seats
  • Previous year trends

On qualifying the cutoff, candidates can be part of the counselling process in the university. The allotment of seats takes place in several rounds, and the candidate has to ensure admission by paying the necessary fee before the deadline.

To students intending to embark on a legal career, schools such as Geeta Institute of Law offer systematic academic assistance and career advice upon admission. It allows students to train and equip them to litigate and work in the courtroom.
